‘How is it that you know of this city? it is only now that I have dreamt of it.’
Inspired by Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ this show casts the city in which it is being performed in the leading role.
From Brisbane to Yokohama, through Kochi, Athens, Bristol and London, Still Night changes continuously, adapting its shape and colours to reflect those of the city around it.
This show mixes Silvia and Gemma’s interest in architecture and site specific work with instruction based theatre allowing the audience to take on a role within the staged narrative through instructions given to them via radio headphones.
Starting as a lecture on the city, as seen through a myriad of lenses, the show mixes real events and places with imagined and mythical perspectives until something changes and the room we are in disappears. Teetering between two worlds, the city becomes more elusive until both lecturer and audiences start to question which world is real.
‘Even in this sterile 12th-floor conference room, Mercuriali and Brockis make striking design choices: a glowing city unfolds from a dress; a horse plays at dice; a will-o’-the-wisp draws us to her lantern. We smell the jasmine in the gardens of Kublai Khan. We feel the first cool after spring rains. And, as our city is revealed to us in a new light in a very literal sense, we finally see why this venue might be the perfect one after all.’ Offsreet Press Brisbane
